Showgirl tells the story of an evening in the life of Jennifer Wilson. Jenny has been performing cabaret at the same London casino for the last two years. She has a three year old daughter, Amy, who she has to leave with a succession of babysitters (the current one is a teenage girl named Gilly). We see both the glamour of her on-stage performances, accompanied by a tatty trio of musicians, and the contrasting, tired, bleak life backstage. Despite her lack of career progress so far Jenny still dreams of the bright lights of the West End and Broadway.
