The story is set in the southern United States prior to and during the American Civil War. Mary is the daughter of William Carson-Smith, a wealthy landowner. She falls in love with Henry Young who is employed to work in the household. They embark on a secret love affair during which he is drafted to fight in the war. It tells of them falling in love, the pain of separation, the fear of war and the joy of reuniting.
